As a Believer, being “real” and showcasing our humanity have never been a part of God’s strategy to attract the world. Being demonstrators of His redemptive power is the draw! We have to be careful about using things like trauma and carnality as the means to attract people. That makes humanity an idol. There’s a difference between using trauma as your identity and using it as a testament to God’s goodness of how you overcame. One romanticizes humanity while the other proves God’s goodness.
I’m not sure where the fascination with making Jesus cool and relatable came from. He doesn’t need our help with relatability nor is He interested in being a part of the cool crowd: neither should we be. Rather than going out of our way to blend in, our lives should prove that Jesus is Lord. That is, proving His Spirit is alive in us! …we are no longer the same!! …yet, yielded to God’s plan and not ours …able to endure the tribulations of this world with gratitude and cheer!! …able to forgive …humble …wise …and demonstrators of supernatural power! This does not mean that we are without problems and internal issues. It means that we have a solution!! …as we choose to lean into Jesus, the difference maker, and make Him known.
